Clarke expects to face Pietersen in Ashes

Australia Test captain Michael Clarke believes Kevin Pietersen could be in England’s squad come the Ashes in July and August this year.

Pietersen, 34, is targeting a return to the England setup in time for the Ashes later this year.

The batsman’s England career was ended in February last year, a month after England were thrashed 5-0 in Australia.

Pietersen made 170 for Surrey on his return to county cricket, and Clarke believes the veteran is on track for an England return when the Ashes start.

“I do think he could be at the Ashes,” Clarke said on Friday, when he was unveiled as the new Melbourne Stars captain.

“He’s certainly scoring enough runs. He’s made it very clear he wants to play and now it comes down to the England selectors and the board making their decision.

“From the Australians’ perspective, I hope he’s not playing because he’s a wonderful player.”

Clarke was unveiled as the captain of the Stars, despite having never played in the Big Bash League after previously signing with the Sydney Thunder.

The 34-year-old said his retirement from one-day internationals would allow him to focus on Twenty20s.

“I think I showed probably most recently in the World Cup final that I can still play in this format,” Clarke said.

“I’ve never had the opportunity to focus on Twenty20 cricket.”

Ballance lauds Root’s all-round performance

England’s latest centurion Gary Ballance said he overcame scratchy form, before reaching triple figures on foreign soil for the first time in his Test career.

Ballance’s fourth ton in just his ninth Test helped England set West Indies a target of 438 for victory in the first Test at Antigua, with the hosts at 98-2 heading into Friday’s fifth day.

In just his ninth Test, Ballance (122) anchored the England innings – combining for a 114-run stand with Joe Root (59), which began on day three, and also contributing to half-century partnerships with Ben Stokes (35) and Jos Buttler (59 not out) before Alastair Cook declared at 333-7.

“Yeah we had to weather the storm a bit yesterday afternoon,” Ballance told ECB’s website, referring to his partnership with fellow Yorkshire product Root.

“Rooty came in and he was positive as always and he played nicely and I was just a bit scratchy at the other end but I was happy doing that – just battling through and try to get through to the close of play with a not out and that’s what happened.”

Ballance went on to produce a 250-ball knock that saw him spend more than five hours in the middle.

He heaped further praise on Root, though, who has had a hand in both of England’s wickets in the fourth innings so far.

Root took the catch to dismiss opener Kraigg Brathwaite off the bowling of Stuart Broad, before his part-time off-spinners snared the wicket of Darren Bravo for 32 to give England some momentum late in the day.

Chris Jordan took a stunning catch at first slip to oust Bravo.

“That’s what Rooty does he comes in and makes things happen,” Ballance said.

“And for Chris to take that catch at slip, he loves a one-hander and it’s another special catch from him.”

Ballance rued not being closer to victory, but was confident the tourists could finish off a positive start to the three-Test series.

“It’s been a good day I think, it would have been nice to have had them three or four down but the wicket is a good wicket and it’s going to be tough,” he lamented.

“We knew it was going to be like that so we’ve got two wickets and eight more tomorrow would be perfect.

“It’s going to be tough work but we’ve got a new ball coming after lunch so we’ll make the most of that.”

Bailey: I’m not expecting ODI captaincy

George Bailey said he is not expecting to be
handed Australia’s one-day international
captaincy, after Michael Clarke’s retirement.
Bailey deputised for the injured Clarke in
Australia’s Cricket World Cup-opening win over England at the MCG on February 14, but did not appear for the eventual champions again.

The middle-order batsman has averaged 42 in 57 ODIs, but found himself out of the side
altogether – and Bailey said the message was
loud and clear on his standing in the
leadership spectrum. Continue reading Bailey: I’m not expecting ODI captaincy

NTV Inks three year deal with CAN

CAN, NTV

Kathmandu – The state-owned Nepal Television has signed a three years broadcast rights with Cricket Association of Nepal for the broadcast of national and international cricket matches to be played in Nepal.

NTV and CAN had inked the broadcast rights agreement on tuesday amidst a function in Kathmandu. As per the agreement, NTV will broadcast all the matches organised by CAN. Similarly, they will be authorised to broadcast ICC, ACC matches.

NTV’s officiating General Manager – Mr. Deepak Mani Dhital and CAN’s Acting President Deepak Koirala signed the agreement. NTV had been broadcasting Nepal’s matches since last 9 years.

However, it was quite surprising to see CAN in some sort of hurry to renew the agreement. They didn’t even plan to invite other parties to bid for the broadcast rights.

The final value of the rights fee agreed has also been disclosed by both parties.
