Hrithik slams anti-Kangana trend on Twitter

Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan, who is embroiled in a legal tussle with Kangana Ranaut, has criticised a Twitter trend which attacks the actress by calling her “characterless” and “publicity hungry”.The trend titled, “Characterless Kangana”, features tweets mentioning her past affairs.

“I like her acting but not her cheap tricks CHARACTER LESS KANGANA,” one Twitter user wrote, while another posted, “Kangana used controversial way for making publicity. That is just so cheap. CHARACTER LESS KANGANA.”

Soon after the trend began, Hrithik, 42, wrote, “It is characterless to judge another. Whatever may be the case. Strangle the anger. Channelize love.”

The two actors have been at loggerheads since the “Queen” star called Hrithik her ‘silly ex’.

The feud between Hrithik and his “Krrish 3” co-star turned nasty after they slapped legal notices on each other.

Hrithik, who was the first to send the legal notice, has demanded that she apologise in a press conference and clear the air about their alleged affair which he firmly refutes.

A defiant Kangana, 29, had said she was not a “dim-witted” teenager and refused to apologise. She instead shot off a counter-notice to Hrithik warning him to take back his notice or face a criminal case

Salman Khan:The superstar who lives dangerously

Salman Khan: The superstar who lives dangerously

  • From the section India
Salman Khan
Salman Khan is one of India’s most bankable stars who has had several hits in recent years

Salman Khan, who has been handed a five-year jail term for running over five homeless men, killing one of them, in a 2002 hit-and-run driving incident in Mumbai, is one of India’s biggest and most popular film stars.

The verdict is a huge setback for the 49-year-old actor who has acted in more than 80 Hindi-language films. He is known for his romantic roles as well as hardcore action films and has won several prestigious Indian cinema awards.

Khan is that rare Bollywood star who has a huge fan following across the vast spectrum of Indian society.

Several of his films in recent years have been huge commercial hits and, at the time of his sentencing, he was reported to be working on several big-ticket projects.

When Dabanng2 – sequel to the hugely successful 2010 film Dabangg – was released over Christmas in 2012, it was screened in more than 3,500 theatres and the cinemas were packed for days.

At an upmarket multiplex in the south district of the Indian capital, Delhi, the crowds included the usual middle-class English-speaking audiences as well as the residents of a neighbouring slum for whom the 350-rupee ($6.6; £4) tickets could not have come cheap.

Although critics did not rate Dabangg2 highly, Khan’s fans clearly did – there were catcalls when he romantically courted the heroine, loud whistles when he showed his dance moves and resounding claps when he beat up the “baddies”.

But his fame has brought with it a long-held image of a larger-than-life macho superstar who lives dangerously.

While the hit-and-run incident has dragged on for nearly 13 years, Khan’s fan base has remained loyal – in fact, it has kept growing steadily and the hits have kept coming.

Five of his latest films – Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg2 – have been huge blockbusters.

The eldest of the three sons of well-known screenplay writer Salim Khan, he is a hit on social media too – his Facebook page is liked by 24.7 million fans while on Twitter, he has 11.7 million followers.

Brush with law

But there is another side to Khan.

Stories about his brawls at parties have long filled the Bollywood gossip columns, and his link-ups with some of his leading ladies have also proved controversial.

In one notorious incident, an angry Khan was reported to have emptied a bottle of cola over the head of an ex-girlfriend in a restaurant.

Another relationship, with actress and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, ended acrimoniously with Ms Rai later making allegations that she was beaten up by Khan – a charge he has denied.

And the 2002 hit-and-run incident in Mumbai was not his first brush with the law.

Khan was arrested in the western state of Rajasthan for illegally hunting and killing a protected blackbuck deer in 1998.

He was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison in 2006, but spent less than a week inside before being released on bail. His appeal is pending in court.

In the past few years, the actor has worked hard to shed his “bad boy” image – with some success.

His devotion to his family, particularly his brothers, is well known and he is reputed to go out of his way to help friends and even strangers.

A few years ago, he started Being Human, a charity to help the underprivileged through education and healthcare. The charity sells T-shirts and other products online and in stores, and the proceeds are used for charitable work.

His relationships with women also seem to have matured. Although he parted ways with actress Katrina Kaif some time ago, they remain good friends and the couple acted together in Ek Tha Tiger.

But the court verdict handing him a five-year sentence shows that his past may well overshadow his current success.

Salman Khan was brought to court amid a huge media scrum

An Indian court has sentenced Bollywood star Salman Khan to five years in jail for killing a homeless man in a 2002 hit-and-run driving incident in Mumbai.

The man was among five people who were run over in the incident. The actor was charged with culpable homicide.

Khan had said his driver was behind the wheel, but the judge said the actor was driving the car and was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Legal experts expect the actor to appeal against the verdict.

Khan’s lawyers have already applied for bail in the Bombay high court which is expected to hear the case shortly, reports say. The actor remains in the trial court while his fate is being decided.

Correspondents say the guilty verdict is a huge setback for Khan although he could have been jailed for 10 years.

The actor is one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, appearing in more than 80 Hindi-language films. Several of his films, including Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aap Ke Hain Kaun, have been huge commercial hits.

On Wednesday morning, as the actor drove to court with his family and friends, fans prayed for the actor’s acquittal.

But Judge DW Deshpande found him guilty on the charge of culpable homicide.

“You were driving the car; you were under the influence of alcohol,” he told the actor as soon as the court proceedings began.

The 49-year-old actor was also found guilty of negligent driving and causing grievous harm to the victims and given separate terms for each offence, but defence lawyers said all the sentences would run concurrently.

Within minutes of entering the courtroom, the judge informed Khan that he was guilty.

After that, for the next three hours as the lawyers from both the sides presented their arguments over his punishment, Khan, who was dressed in a white shirt, remained calm and composed.

His family and friends inside the court were hoping that he would get a jail term of three years or less.

But when the judge sentenced him to five years in prison, Khan’s expression changed immediately.

And even as his sisters tried to comfort him, the actor looked visibly upset.

Several of his Bollywood colleagues spoke out in his support and expressed their sympathies. Actress Hema Malini said she was praying for him.

If the actor is put behind bars, it will affect several high-profile film projects he is involved in at the moment.

Driver’s testimony

The case has gripped Bollywood and India for years.

Late on the night of 28 September 2002, Khan’s Toyota Land Cruiser hit the American Express bakery in the Bandra area of Mumbai, authorities say.

The vehicle ran over five people sleeping on the street, killing 38-year-old Noor Ullah Khan and seriously injuring three others. Another person received minor injuries.

The prosecution alleged that Khan had been driving the car while drunk. Giving evidence in March., Khan had denied he was drunk or that he was driving the vehicle.

But many witnesses disagreed.

A constable attached to Khan’s security detail said in a statement to the police that the “drunk” actor had lost control of the car. The policeman died in 2007 of tuberculosis.

In April, Khan’s driver told the court that he had crashed the car after a tyre burst but the court did not accept that version.
